Gymnasium, Karur

The TNPL Gym was conceived as a transformation of an existing shooting range within the Kagithapuram township for Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited. With just 45 days from start to finish, the project had a design approach that was decisive, efficient, and practical to execute, while completely refreshing the identity of the building.

Taking inspiration from the industrial setting, the material palette was fixed around steel, glass, and aluminium. The exposed structural language was a consequence of architectural intent, and also time and budgetary constraints. The exterior space was decided to be a gathering space very early on in the process, and seating integrated with landscape was planned. The seaters were clad in yellow sandstone, while the passage was paved in granite.

Large openings frame greenery from within - especially from the treadmills, while the rest of the space reiterates the red, black, and white theme chosen for the project. The landscape on the rear was planned to be easily changed, thus offering a different view every season.
